Fans of Killer’s Tacos’ legendary local shows and eats will have to say goodbye this month as the owners prepare to shutter the shop ahead of retirement.
Jeff Seley, who has run the shop with his son Joey since 2016, will retire next month, with Killer’s shutting its doors after its last show July 1. But the shows will go on, just under new ownership: Mark Kimberlin, the owner of food truck El Cucuy Burritos and a local musician, will take over the Killer’s space at 424 Bryan St.
“We absolutely love Jeff and Joey and hope to carry on the legacy,” a post on El Cucuy’s Facebook page read Tuesday. “Thank you, Killer’s, for everything you’ve done for our community and music scene. More burritos and shows on the horizon, see you all on the other side this fall.”
Nestled inside an unassuming-looking house, the taqueria has long been a mecca for local music lovers, hosting shows against the backdrop of the shop’s quirky interior. Punk, metal and hip-hop performers have frequented the DIY venue, making sure Killer’s lives up to the B-52’s lyrics — “The whole shack shimmies” — that are inscribed on an interior mural. Visitors could also hunt for Killer’s hidden secret menu, located somewhere inside.
Though the closure is bittersweet, Killer’s ownership is excited to pass the shop on to a local who will continue its legacy.
“Joey and Jeff want to thank all the friends we’ve made along the way. Also much love to our loyal staff who will unfortunately have to transition to new jobs,” the shop posted on its Facebook page on Tuesday. “We love you DENTON!”
